McArthur is currently seeking a skilled Project Engineer - Mechanical Design & Technical Writing to support the development, review and delivery of technical engineering documentation, mechanical design drawings and risk assessment processes.

This role would suit a mechanically minded engineering professional who is confident interpreting technical drawings, reviewing design information, preparing clear documentation and working closely with project teams to ensure technical information is accurate, compliant and easy to understand.

About the role

In this position, you will be responsible for supporting mechanical design activities, reviewing technical drawings, preparing technical documentation and assisting with risk assessments across engineering projects.

You will work closely with engineers, project managers, quality teams and other stakeholders to ensure project documentation, design outputs and technical information are delivered to a high standard.

Key responsibilities

Your duties will include:

  • Creating, modifying and reviewing detailed mechanical drawings and designs using CAD software.
  • Interpreting technical drawings and design specifications.
  • Supporting the development of mechanical design solutions in line with project requirements.
  • Ensuring designs and documentation comply with relevant standards, regulations and project specifications.
  • Preparing and maintaining technical documentation, including manuals, operating instructions, maintenance guides and safety protocols.
  • Translating complex technical information into clear and user-friendly documentation.
  • Conducting technical risk assessments on drawings, systems and components.
  • Identifying potential design, safety, reliability or performance risks.
  • Recommending design modifications or risk mitigation strategies where required.
  • Documenting risk assessment outcomes and communicating findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Participating in design reviews and providing technical feedback.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design or a related field.
  • Experience using design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.
  • Strong technical writing skills and experience preparing technical documentation.
  • The ability to interpret and analyse complex mechanical drawings and designs.
  • Experience conducting technical risk assessments or supporting risk mitigation processes.
  • Familiarity with engineering standards, regulatory requirements and design compliance.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with engineers, project managers and other stakeholders.

Desirable experience

Previous experience in an engineering, manufacturing, mechanical design or technical documentation environment will be highly regarded. Experience with mechanical systems, materials, manufacturing processes or project management tools would also be beneficial.
