Most cloud engineers spend their careers operating environments designed by somebody else.

The architecture decisions have already been made. The governance model already exists. The standards are established.

The opportunity to genuinely influence direction is often limited.

This role is different.

You'll join a large Australian healthcare organisation investing heavily in cloud, cybersecurity, digital platforms, data and AI.

Supporting critical healthcare services across Australia, the organisation is modernising its technology landscape while strengthening the cloud foundations required to support future growth.

For the right engineer, this creates an opportunity to contribute while significant decisions around architecture, automation, migration, security and platform maturity are still being made.

Why This Role Exists

The organisation currently operates across both AWS and Azure.

AWS is the more mature platform today, while Azure is entering a significant uplift phase as the organisation builds greater consistency, governance and capability across both cloud estates.

The organisation is moving beyond cloud adoption and into cloud optimisation, governance and platform maturity.

Over the next 12–24 months, the cloud team will support migration from traditional infrastructure into cloud, strengthen security and governance, mature Infrastructure as Code practices, improve FinOps capability and introduce new cloud-native workloads.

One of the highest-profile initiatives underway is an AI-powered digital assistant platform supported by modern AWS services.

Deep AI expertise is not required. However, engineers in this team will gain exposure to the cloud foundations and platform capabilities that support emerging technologies.

The Role

This is a cloud engineering role first and foremost.

The focus is less about responding to incidents and more about helping create secure, scalable and sustainable cloud environments.

You'll contribute across AWS and Azure platform engineering, Infrastructure as Code, cloud governance, security, CI/CD automation, migration initiatives, FinOps and emerging cloud-native services.

The team is intentionally lean, creating opportunities to influence standards, governance and engineering practices across the cloud environment.

For engineers coming from consulting, managed services or large enterprise environments, this provides the opportunity to own outcomes over the long term rather than moving between projects.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Design and implement cloud platform capabilities
  • Build Infrastructure as Code solutions using Terraform/OpenTofu and CloudFormation
  • Develop CI/CD pipelines and automation through GitHub Actions
  • Strengthen cloud governance, security and operational maturity
  • Support migration initiatives across AWS and Azure
  • Improve platform reliability, scalability and cost efficiency
  • Contribute to the future cloud operating model
  • If something is being deployed repeatedly, the question becomes:

Can it be automated?

If a cloud service can be designed better, the question becomes:

Should we rethink it?

That mindset is highly valued here.

The Environment

You'll work across technologies including:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Terraform / OpenTofu
  • AWS CloudFormation
  • GitHub Actions
  • CI/CD Automation
  • IAM and Cloud Security
  • FinOps and Cost Optimisation
  • AWS Bedrock

Experience across every technology is not expected. The stronger requirement is a solid cloud engineering foundation, Infrastructure as Code capability and a desire to continue learning.

What You'll Bring

You may currently be working as a Cloud Engineer, Senior Cloud Engineer, Cloud Platform Engineer, DevOps Engineer or Infrastructure Engineer with strong cloud exposure

You'll likely bring:

  • Strong AWS and/or Azure experience
  • Infrastructure as Code expertise
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines and automation
  • Cloud security and governance awareness
  • Strong problem-solving capability
  • The ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders

We're looking for engineers who enjoy learning, taking ownership and contributing to long-term platform improvement.

Why This Role

This role will suit someone who wants more than another cloud support position. You'll gain exposure to cloud architecture, platform engineering, migration, automation, governance, FinOps and emerging cloud-native technologies while working in an environment where technical contribution is visible and valued. Unlike larger enterprises where responsibilities are heavily segmented, you'll see how decisions are made and have direct access to the people making them. For the right engineer, this creates a genuine pathway into cloud architecture and broader technical leadership over time. You'll be contributing to technology platforms that support hospitals, aged care and community services across Australia, where reliability, scalability and sound engineering genuinely matter.

If you're looking for an opportunity to help shape a cloud environment while continuing to accelerate your own capability, this role will feel very different.
