Who we are?
At Police Bank, we exist to serve those who serve. For over 60 years, we’ve supported our members with trusted, straightforward banking. We’re evolving into a more modern, member-first organisation one that combines strong foundations with forward-thinking ideas, where people are empowered to make an impact and do meaningful work.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced In-House Legal Counsel to join our team and provide end-to-end legal support across commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance. This is a broad, hands-on role suited to a pragmatic lawyer who enjoys partnering with the business, navigating complex regulatory environments, and delivering commercially focused legal solutions.
You will act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders across the organisation, balancing legal and regulatory risk with strategic business objectives. Working closely with executive leaders and key business units, you will play an important role in supporting the Bank's continued growth, regulatory obligations, and member-focused objectives.
This is a unique opportunity to join an organisation where you can genuinely shape and influence the legal function. As a key legal adviser, you will have significant autonomy to establish and enhance legal processes, develop frameworks and tools, strengthen governance practices, and embed legal best practice across the business. The role offers broad exposure across commercial, regulatory, and strategic matters, providing the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while building a modern, scalable legal function that supports the Bank's long-term success.
What you’ll be doing
Commercial Legal Work
Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on a wide range of commercial agreements, including customer and supplier contracts, distribution agreements, outsourcing and service agreements, NDAs, MOUs, and partnership arrangements.
Provide clear, commercially focused legal advice to business teams on contract risk, liability, pricing structures, and dispute mitigation.
Support product development, procurement, technology, and business teams with timely and practical legal advice.
Develop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, and legal guidance materials to improve efficiency and consistency.
Manage and advise on contract disputes, claims, and negotiations, including coordinating with external legal advisers where required.
Regulatory & Compliance Work
Monitor, interpret, and advise on applicable laws, regulations, prudential standards, and regulatory guidance relevant to the banking and financial services sector
Support the design, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of regulatory compliance frameworks, policies, and procedures.
Advise on regulatory change initiatives and assess legal and compliance impacts on products, operations, and strategic initiatives.
Engage with regulators and industry bodies where appropriate, including supporting responses to regulatory inquiries.
Support internal audits, compliance reviews, and remediation activities.
Deliver legal and regulatory training to internal stakeholders to build awareness and strengthen compliance culture.
Broader Legal & Corporate Support
Provide legal support on corporate governance matters, including Board and Committee papers and governance processes
Manage relationships with external legal advisers and oversee legal expenditure.
Contribute to enterprise risk management activities and strategic business initiatives.
Support the ongoing development and maturity of the Bank's legal function, governance frameworks, and legal risk management practices.
What we’re looking for
You are a qualified lawyer with at least five years' post-qualification experience, ideally gained within a regulated industry or complex corporate environment. You bring strong expertise in commercial contracting, regulatory advisory, and legal risk management, with previous in-house experience in banking or financial services highly regarded.
You have a proven ability to translate complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, practical, and commercially focused advice, and are comfortable balancing legal risk with business objectives.
A strong communicator and trusted business partner, you build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels and have the confidence to influence decision-making in a collaborative and constructive manner. You are highly organised, detail-oriented, and exercise sound judgment, while thriving in a fast-paced environment.
Most importantly, you are excited by the opportunity to take ownership, shape legal frameworks and processes, and make a meaningful contribution to the ongoing growth and success of the Bank.
